Position Title Collections Development Librarian
Additional Information

Ball State University Libraries includes Bracken Library and branch libraries in the Cooper Science Building and Architecture Building. The Libraries employ 47 professionals and 70 staff employees. With over 1.5 million volumes and 250 databases, the Libraries provide access to a full spectrum of scholarly resources and also offers vibrant learning space for over 1.4 million annual visitors.

Position Function

Perform activities related to developing and sustaining University Libraries’ resource collections to meet user needs, including material selection, deselection, preservation, evaluation and assessment; coordinate collection maintenance activities and replacement and gift operations; serve as collection development liaison for assigned departments.

Minimum Education

MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program.

Minimum Experience

Professional experience in library acquisitions, collection development and management, or other related area; experience with library automated systems, such as OCLC, ALMA.

Minimum Other

Effective oral and written communication skills; working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Education

Additional advanced degrees.

Preferred Experience

Collections development or acquisitions experience in an academic library; familiarity with publishers and trends in publishing, both print and non-print; demonstrated analytical abilities including use of qualitative/quantitative data analysis and proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with project development and management.

Preferred Other

An awareness of current issues and trends in librarianship and potential for scholarly and professional achievement.

Duties & Responsibilities

Job Duty

Select materials in best format through approval plans, reviews, publishers’ catalogs, and bibliographies and serve as liaison with specified departments on matters of collection development.

Review specific subject collections for purposes of deselection, preservation/conservation and assessment of their adequacy to support university curricular and research needs; prepare collection evaluations regarding the collections’ strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations for improvement, utilizing metrics and other evaluation criteria to support data-driven decisions.

Review the back volume periodical collection for purposes of deselection and preservation/conservation bearing in mind holdings of other state libraries and titles unique to Ball State University Libraries.
