Position Function

Administer all aspects of formal recreation programs and fitness center management for the Office of Sports Facilities Management and Recreation Services. The programs of oversight include but are not limited to: Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Youth and Family Programming and Rec-Fit Classes. The fitness center management include two fitness centers, a functional fitness gym, and Rec-Fit Rooms.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree

Minimum Experience

At least three years of professional campus recreation or related experience. Professional experience must include supervision of student staff or equivalent in related experience.

Minimum Other

Ability to work nights and weekends; demonstrate comprehensive program planning and operating skills, maintain and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree or higher in recreation administration, sport administration, or related field.

Preferred Experience

At least four years of professional campus recreation or related experience; experience must include supervision of student staff or equivalent in related experience.

Preferred Other
Pre-Employment Screening Requires successful completion of a background check.

Duties & Responsibilities

Job Duty

Provide support in the development, planning, direction, and coordination of comprehensive university recreation programs to include but not be limited to: intramural sports, fitness programs, non-credit recreation instruction, youth and family programs, sport club management, ; communicate effectively with others; demonstrate flexibility within the position assignments as needed.

Recruit, hire, train and develop all employees including two professional coordinators and undergraduate student employees and actively promote and develop opportunities for all student employees; coordinate all in-service training sessions for all employees.

Develop and evaluate annual goals and reports which accurately reflect campus recreation requirements, program, and university mission statements.

Support the development of a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan for all aspects of the campus recreation program including the development of all activities and programs.

Provide opportunities which include leadership development for students through program involvement, in-services, and training seminars.

Actively promote and recruit a diverse recreation user group through assisting in advertising, presentations, programming, scheduling, etc.; effectively communicate with other departments and staff on campus; work closely with university departments and organizations in assisting recreation facility usage including School of Kinesiology, Athletics, and Student Affairs.

Support the continued development of the recreation facilities risk management plan for all formal activities, programs, and facilities.

Assist with financial resources including student payroll and all recreation equipment in accordance with university policy and procedures under the guidance of the Associate Director of Sports Facilities and Recreation Services.

Assist with the organization and maintenance of all records, manuals, and guidelines associated with the campus recreation program; attend, when appropriate, professional meetings, workshops, seminars; write and deliver presentations; and promote Ball State as a leader in the field of campus recreation.

Coordinate all matters of discipline to patrons utilizing the university Student Conduct Code; hold and conduct disciplinary meetings with patrons that are reported to be in violation of policies and procedures.
