Position Function

Serve as the principal administrator of the department; plan, direct, and coordinate the academic, operational, personnel, budgetary, and student activities of the department; provide leadership and direction in the development and implementation of academic programs and in the maintenance of excellence in teaching, scholarly productivity of creative endeavor, and service. (Five-year renewable term appointment.)

Minimum Education

A Ph.D. in Planning or closely allied field is required. If the candidate’s Ph.D. is not in planning, then significant professional or academic achievement in the field of planning is required.

Minimum Experience

Candidate must have internal governance experience at the departmental, college and university levels, with respect to curriculum, research and service.

Further, the candidate should demonstrate a record of leadership in forging relationship with other academic units, local communities, and local governments.

Finally, the candidate must demonstrate a strong record of scholarship and teaching in higher education and service to the field of planning in national or state-wide professional organizations (e.g. APA, AICP, or ACSP).

We seek a candidate with an active academic, professional or community engagement agenda that will attract grant funding; who has an interest in strengthening the department’s presence in the cities of Muncie and Indianapolis; and the ability to recruit students especially from underserved populations (e.g. poor and minority students and students who are the first in their family to attend college).

Serve as the department’s primary spokesperson and representative to the college, university, and external community.
